If you’re sourcing Thai mango for the first time, the variety names can be confusing. Nam Dok Mai and Mahachanok are the two names international buyers hear most often, and they’re often assumed to be interchangeable. They’re not — and picking the right one for your program depends less on which tastes best in a sample room and more on how the fruit will actually travel, sell, and hold up once it leaves Thailand.
Nam Dok Mai: the benchmark dessert mango
Nam Dok Mai (น้ำดอกไม้) means “flower water” in Thai, and it’s the variety most people picture when they think of Thai mango. It’s elongated with a distinctive curved beak, golden-yellow skin when ripe, and fiberless, silky flesh with sugar levels around 17–20° Brix — among the sweetest of any Thai mango variety. The flavor is intensely floral and honeyed, with very low acidity.
For buyers, that eating quality is exactly the appeal: Nam Dok Mai is the variety customers ask for by name, and it commands premium positioning in retail and foodservice. The trade-off is delicacy. Its thin skin and soft flesh mean it needs careful grading, consistent cold chain, and faster stock rotation than sturdier varieties.
Mahachanok: bred for the journey
Mahachanok is a Thai hybrid of the Sunset and Nang Klanwan varieties, developed in Chiang Mai and named after a story from a book by King Rama IX. It’s long and curved like Nam Dok Mai, but its skin turns a distinctive yellow-orange with a red or pink blush as it ripens, and the flavor is sweet with a light acidic finish that many buyers describe as more balanced.
What sets Mahachanok apart commercially is handling tolerance. Its firmer flesh and thicker skin give it a longer window between harvest and the point where it’s too soft to sell — a real advantage for sea freight, longer transit times, or retail programs where shelf turnover isn’t guaranteed to be fast.
Which one is right for your program?
A few questions worth asking before you commit to a variety:
– Are your customers asking for Thai mango by name? If so, they likely mean Nam Dok Mai specifically — it’s the variety with the strongest brand recognition internationally.
– How long is your transit time? Air freight and short sea routes suit Nam Dok Mai’s delicate flesh. Longer sea freight favors Mahachanok’s sturdier handling.
– Is this a premium or volume program? Nam Dok Mai supports premium positioning; Mahachanok is often the more forgiving choice for volume retail.
Many experienced buyers don’t choose one over the other — they run both, with Mahachanok providing a reliable volume base and Nam Dok Mai supporting a premium tier for customers who want the best-known name in Thai mango.
DelPingo specializes in Nam Dok Mai
We’ve built our business around a single variety rather than a broad multi-fruit catalogue, because we believe doing one thing at genuine scale beats spreading thin across many. Our plantations in Chon Buri, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi are managed specifically for export-grade Nam Dok Mai, graded and packed in-house for international shipping.
If Nam Dok Mai fits your program, get in touch for current pricing and availability, or explore our plantations to see where it’s grown.
